The Devil And Mr. Good Lord
as performed by Jack Kingston, 1973, Kingston Hot Springs, TX

Now the Devil and the Good Lord had a talk one day,
but they decided to meet only half way.
Upon his arrival the Good Lord with his hand on the bible.

Good morning Mr. Devil. Good morning Mr. Good Lord.
By any chance do you have any land on hand for sale?
Yes, said the Good Lord. I have some land on hand for sale.

It’s down on the Big Bend in West Texas and it joins the Rio Grande.

So the trades were made and the deeds were given
and the Good Lord went back to his home in heaven.

The Devil put thorns on the cactus and longhorns on the steers.
And he built an addition to the jackrabbit's ears.

He dried up old springs and the windmills broke down,
and the cattle without water were just standin around.

They was all so poor that they had to be fed.
And every poor rancher was way in the red.

He built mountains so high that a pack jack can't climb,
but that devil's still working and he's way behind.

And there's many an old cowboy that has rode up that trail
said that old Devil turned Big Bend into hell.
